Thailand, the Land of Smiles, is filled with friendly locals and beautiful sights, but it has its dark side if you are caught misbehaving. With the local’s sense of propriety and reverence for historical and sacred sites, there is no need to say that you should move with respect. And, with their weird laws about keeping your underwear on, you will definitely get into trouble for walking around in the nude. We all know it’s just for kicks but maybe it’s better to play it safe as there are always security cameras and phones about. And, yes, if you post it yourself, make sure you are out of the country before you do. Learn from the worst tourist fails on our list.
BRITON, CANADIAN ARRESTED IN THAILAND FOR GRAFFITI ON WALL
Now that we are in the digital age with CCTV cameras positioned everywhere, defacing an ancient Thai wall is not a good idea. Two tourists, both 23, were caught on cam spray-painting an old fortress dating back to the 13th century by Tha Phae Gate. Facing ten years in prison and a million-Baht fine, the two tourists are now awaiting their trial, which won’t be set until after two months. The lesson: Although we want to leave a mark in every place we set foot in, defacing a historic site is not the way to go.
CHEEKY BUTT SELFIE DUO ARRESTED IN THAILAND
Two men in San Diego were arrested at the airport in Thailand for taking a picture of their naked butts in front of Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn, and posting it on their Instagram account. Sure enough, they are doing this for their 14,000 Instagram followers but @traveling_butts should know their borders. In a Thai temple where females can’t expose their shoulders or any part above the knees, even the celebrity traveling butts can’t make an appearance. It doesn’t matter how nice your butt cheeks are, exposing them for a selfie in front of a religious shrine in Thailand can get you into a lot of trouble. In fact, if you read our article on Thailand’s Strange Laws, you will know that going commando is illegal in the Land of Smiles.
TWO TOURISTS GOT CAUGHT FLASHING IN PUBLIC
Two ladies were caught on video flashing their breasts from the window of a slow-moving car. Yes. It’s probably caused by all the booze they had from the New Year celebrations in Phuket but Thailand probably isn’t the best place for such displays. Identified from the videos that were taken, they were hunted by the police and were fined and given a lecture on morality.
WOMAN CAUGHT FOR DRUGGED UP DREADLOCKS
You might want to put the fun in your locks by drugging it up with cocaine, but it’s a fashion statement for mug shots. A lady traveling from Sao Paulo, Brazil was caught at Suvarnabhumi Airport for smuggling 1.5kg of cocaine in her dreadlocks. Perhaps she thought it would pass off as dandruff but she wasn’t so lucky. Her dreadlocks got hacked off as evidence but her hair dilemma is currently the least of her problems.
TOURISTS ARRESTED FOR SKINNY DIPPING IN PATTAYA
Two naked tourists were arrested opposite Central Festival in Pattaya for walking around naked after skinny dipping. Maybe it’s an innocent mistake – after all, they were pretty drunk when they were caught – so given the benefit of the doubt that they must have lost their clothes, they got off the hook easily. Another incident, however, was a bit more embarrassing to bear. A 40-year-old Chinese woman was fished out off the beach and was arrested for skinny dipping after locals saw her running into the water butt naked.
