The Artsy Way to Dine and Drink: W District, Bangkok

W District: The Best Night Market of Bangkok

W District. Your new favorite place in Bangkok.

You may not have heard of W District in Bangkok. Unlike famous mega-markets, like Chatuchak and Ratchada, it has traditionally been an insider secret. But all that may be about to change. Edgy and urban with delicious food and a great street art scene, W District is an up and coming part of Bangkok nightlife and is a great place to spend the evening on a trip to the capital.

So, what’s it like to visit, where is it and how can you make the most of a trip to what will probably become your new favorite place in Bangkok?

The Art of W District

Walking into W District for the first time, the initial thing that hits you is the art on the walls and the sculptures between the tables. From a modernist interpretation of the Leaning Tower of Pisa to a huge 3D monster made of knotted black rope, you know you’ve arrived somewhere a bit different! If you’ve made it in daylight then spend some time wandering round enjoying the talent on display and getting a few pictures. If it’s already dark then you’ll be able to appreciate the designs of Chinese lanterns used to light the tables- either way bring your camera, you’ll be lost without it.

The Massive Food Selection of W District

There are over 50 food stalls in W District with no two stalls selling the same thing. Fancy some sea food? Try the fresh sushi and sashimi. In the mood for Thai? The pad thai here is legendary and only costs 50 baht. Craving some home comforts? Grab a pizza or a burger to hit the spot. Indian, Mexican, Italian, Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, the list of cuisines goes on!

Ordering your food at W District is just like a normal Thai night market. Once you’ve taken a stroll round the stalls to choose your dinner then order it from the vendor and take it to a table to eat. Are all the tables taken? Don’t worry! Sharing is normal, so ask to shuffle on the end of someone else’s table and let the conversation flow. Many a new friendship has been formed like this!

The pure amount of restaurants in W District can be overwhelming.

You need a drink too, of course

Enjoying all this food and art is thirsty work. There are a couple of different bars to choose from selling the classic Chang alongside western imports like Carlsberg and local favorite U. If you’re a craft beer fan then head to the bar in the far corner which sells some unusual brews.

Most of the bars stay open while the food stalls are serving, and staff will serve you at the table while you eat. For the night owls amongst us there is even a bar that stays open 24 hours a day, but beware, some of those craft beers can be pretty strong…

How to Get to W District

W District is located at Sukhumvit 71 in the Phra Khanong area of the city. The easiest way to get there is to take the BTS to Phra Khanong station, and then the market is a short 3 minute walk southeast along Sukhumvit. If you’re taking an Uber or a metered taxi then ask for Sukhumvit Soi 71 and you’ll see the market in front of you.
