While Thai food is delicious, fresh and healthy, there are times during your Asian adventures when you just fancy a meal that isn’t based around rice or noodles. It is during these moments when you just crave a juicy burger, a decent salad or a hearty bowl of pasta. Luckily for us, Thailand caters excellently to the tastes of travelers, with tons of western restaurants in Koh Phangan serving up food from around the world. Here we’ll choose some of our favorites on the island so you’ll know where to go when hunger strikes!
Locco’s Pizza Bar
If it’s Italian you fancy then you’ll want to head to Haad Yao for the best pizza and pasta on the island. The décor is refreshing and modern and the owners Susanna and Pedro are really friendly hosts. The pasta is home-made which definitely shows in the fresh flavour and light texture. The pizzas are to die for, the caprese salad divine and the cocktails made with fresh, local fruit are some of the best.
For tasty, healthy, vegan dishes, you’ll want to head to Srithanu on the north west of the island. This part of Koh Phangan is packed with health-food cafés and yoga studios so is the perfect place to enjoy some greens. Eat.co is probably the best option, with a varied menu and flavours that pack a punch. The BBQ mushroom burger is one of the tastiest vegan burgers I’ve tried and the passionfruit kombucha fizz makes you feel like you’re drinking a cocktail but with added health benefits!
Bubba’s Coffee Bar
Located in Baan Tai, Bubba’s Coffee Bar is one of the top breakfast spots on the island. Decent bread is often hard to come by in Thailand so finding somewhere with sourdough and bagels has to be worth a mention! With salmon, poached eggs avocado toast and Buddha bowls, you know you’re on to a winner. Plus, they have strong WiFi so you can while a few hours here eating scrumptious food while working or calling home.
Vintage Burgers, Friends, and Booze
As the name suggests this is a great place to go for a burger with your pals. The restaurant specialises in one thing so you can expect a tasty, juicy burger and some of the best fries on the island. Whether you choose a burger piled high with caramelised onions or opt for one with a fried egg on top, your mouth will be watering the second it is placed in front of you! The cocktails they serve aren’t half bad either or you can choose a classic Chang to wash it all down.
For a romantic treat there’s nothing quite like the beachside dining at L’Alcove on Hinkong Beach. Here you can dine on delicious French cuisine with your toes in the sand and the sound of waves lapping at the shore. With classics like steak and sautéed potatoes and chicken a la creme you can’t go wrong. And if you really want to push the boat out, L’Alcove has a great wine menu to pair perfectly with your meal!
Another healthy option for breakfast or lunch is Pura Vida in Haad Yao. The owners originate from Portugal and therefore many of their dishes are traditional Portuguese specialities. The granola, pancakes and fruit bowls are yummy choices for breakfast while their sandwiches and burgers are hearty, tasty and filling so are ideal for brunch or lunch before heading out to explore the island.
Haad Chao Phao
While it’s not strictly Western food I thought this one was worth adding as Indian food is different to Thai and may just hit the spot. The curries here are heavenly and the location right on the water is the perfect place to watch the sun go down! Go with friends and try the chicken tikka alongside some dahl, rice, rottis and bhajis and you won’t be disappointed.
