Chiang Mai’s Best Rooftop Bars: The High Life
If you’re after a view in Chiang Mai chances are you’re going to head up Doi Suthep. After all Chiang Mai’s very own mountain does have a spectacular vantage point. What it doesn’t have? Decadent cocktails, cold beer and bar snacks. For those you’ll need to head to the incredible rooftop bars in Chiang Mai.
Bangkok might be the king of rooftop bars. That’s not a hard title to claim thanks to all of the skyscrapers. Chiang Mai approaches rooftop bars with a different vibe. It’s all about soaking up the noise lilting upwards from the street, enjoying the rolling hills around the city and soaking up the warm evening air.
There’s a real mixture of bar style and size in Chiang Mai. Some are luxurious hotel rooftops with pricey but delicious cocktails. Others are quieter and more relaxed, perfect for kicking back after a day’s sightseeing. Let’s see what we’ve got…
This is the one for the cocktail connoisseurs. Set on the 5th floor of the luxury boutique Akyra’s Manor it’s a lesson in decadent luxury. Plush sofas, infinity pool and premium drinks. The staff are incredibly knowledgeable and will happily rustle you up something off-menu if your favorite drink isn’t there.
Expect prices to start around 200 baht for wine (there’s an incredible list!) and beer. The cocktail menu starts at 350 baht and climbs from there. Unusually for Thailand this place stays open a little later than the usual midnight, closing at 1am.
Location: 22/2 Nimmana Haeminda Rd Lane 9, Su Thep, Mueang Chiang Mai District, Chiang Mai 50200
At some point the shopper in you will probably want to enjoy some decent outlets, AC, a great food court or even watch a film. All are available at Maya but the best is on the roof. There’s not just one but 6 rooftop bars here, each with their own style and ideas. Our pick of the bunch is The Myst. It’s probably the most expensive but it’s also the classiest. That’s what rooftop bars are all about right? Staying classy? The Myst also has some of the best views of Doi Suthep at sunset.
Turn up on a weekend for live music, a great drink selection and rainbow shots! Turning up late? Go down into the car park and ride the glass elevator up through the deserted mall. Another bar that’s open until 1am.
Location: 55, Moo 5, Huay Kaew Road | Chang Phuek, Chiang Mai 50300
If you’re after the highest rooftop bar in Chiang Mai, you’ve found it. On the 24th floor of the Pornping Tower Hotel, the Blue Bat commands the widest and farthest reaching views of all the Chiang Mai bars. There are occasional drinks deals during the so called golden hour between 17:00 and 18:00 aligned with sunset over Doi Suthep.
It’s not the best decorated bar on the list, nor the one with the nicest charm, but it is the highest and the drink and staff are still great. Open until midnight.
Location: 24/F Pornping Tower Hotel, 46-48 Charoenprathet Road, Chiang Mai
As the name suggests this one isn’t just about cocktails and drinks. If you’re after a rooftop meal to go alongside your beverages then Xanadu has you covered. The bowtie clad staff are attentive and ready to help at a moment’s notice and will make your time at the bar very enjoyable.
This is probably the best spot for a romantic dinner, so grab your bunkmates’ hand and take them up to the 17th floor for an evening treat. If you’re lucky the house band will start up to serenade you. Open from 18:00-00:00.
Location: 17/F Furama Hotel, 54 Huay Kaew Road
