If you want to know how to get to Koh Phangan (for parties and beaches) and to Koh Tao ( for diving) from Phuket, follow this guide for in depth information on the best way to get to your destination! From vans, buses, fast boats, or ferries, it can be quite an adventure getting to the islands.
PHUKET TO KOH PHANGAN
There are a ton of great deals out there that provide transportation options in one seamless and cheap package. This is a great option since you only need to make one purchase and the route is already mapped out for you. All you need to do is show up!
The best packages usually pick you up from Phuket Airport by mini van to transfer you to the bus pick up location where it will take you to the pier for you to catch your ferry to Koh Phangan. This whole trip will cost you about 1200 Baht ($40 USD), which is a small price to pay for the ease of having everything organized for you.
The only downside to this trip is it’s 8 hours long, and with the multiple transfers, there is a good chance there will be delays causing your travel time to go up. However, if you have a good attitude and adventure in mind, you can turn a long annoying trip in to an awesome Thailand experience making friends along the way before you get to Koh Phangan to check a full moon party off your bucket list!
If you’re not into the idea of buying a package to get to Koh Phangan and want to save a couple extra bucks on your travels, then booking transport independently is also an option. The best way to do this is to take a bus from Phuket to Surat Thani, then another bus from Surat Thani to Donsak Pier.
The bus to Surat Thani takes 4.5 hours and costs around 270 Baht ($9 USD) and the bus from Surat Thani to Donsak Pier takes 1 hour and costs around 150 Baht ($5 USD). From the drop off point at Donsak Pier it takes about 15 minutes to get to the actual port where you will catch your ferry. The cheapest, fastest ferry from Donsak Pier to Koh Phangan costs 130 Baht ($4 USD) and takes around 2.5 hours.
This entire trip adds up to be half the price as the transportation package mentioned above and takes the same amount of time. So if you’re happy to book tickets from multiple different transportation companies, you can save some money for extra beers to shoot back on the island!
KOH PHANGAN TO KOH TAO
Once you’ve partied your face off in Koh Phangan, you’ll probably be ready to hop over to another island and have a different kind of adventure. Koh Tao is known for its popular diving sites attracting people from all over the world to dive in crystal clear water and discover vibrant sea-life. If Koh Tao is on your itinerary after Koh Phangan, then the best way to get there is by ferry. There are a couple of different ferries to choose from.
The fastest boat that will get you to Koh Tao is the Lomprayah high speed catamaran. It takes 1 hour to reach Koh Tao from Koh Phangan, however since it’s quite fast, it’s an extremely rough ride. So if you have a weak stomach or get seasick, then this is probably not the best option for you.
The Seatran Discovery costs the same amount as the Lomprayah fast boat, 500 Baht ($16 USD), but since it’s not as fast and takes a half hour longer to get to Koh Tao, the ride is a little easier and may allow you to keep your lunch down.
Songserm is the cheapest at 340 Baht ($11 USD), however it’s much slower than the others taking 1 hour 45 minutes to reach Koh Tao. The fact that it’s slower does have its advantages allowing for a leisurely ride you can actually enjoy. So the choice is up to you (or your hangover)!
