GETTING YOUR PADI IN THAILAND

Getting your PADI in Thailand can be a memorable and mind-blowing experience.

With its warm tropical seas and colorful marine life, it is one of the best places in the world to get your diving license. Make your first open water experience by doing it in paradise.

KOH TAO SCUBA DIVING CERTIFICATION

With 50 PADI and SSI dive centers on the island of Koh Tao, the heavy competition would mean lower rates and better service. You will also be lucky enough to spot some cool sea creatures like reef shocks, turtles, and manta rays. And, if you do your dive course from March to April, you may even have a close encounter of the whale shark kind.

KOH LANTA SCUBA DIVING CERTIFICATION

Koh Lanta may not really offer much in terms of diving but its close proximity to Hin Daeng and Hin Muang will give you access to an underwater paradise that will blow your mind with its schools of tropical fish, leopard sharks, and manta rays.

There is nothing like having the best of both worlds if you can afford it. Taking your course while cruising over Thai and Burmese seas will allow you to make the most of the sights the Andaman has to offer. Aside from finding Nemo and his friends, the parrot fish, sea turtles, and sea horses, you also get to explore some wrecks.

PHUKET DIVE CERTIFICATION

One of the highlights of doing your open water diving course in Phuket is experiencing the beautiful topside scenery and the exotic marine life of Koh Racha Yai and Koh Racha Noi during the open water portion of your diving course.

PADI… SSI… DOES IT MATTER?

Well, as they both follow the framework given by the World Recreational Scuba Diving Council, there really is not much of a difference between the two. Although both are recognized worldwide, PADI seems to be more widespread than SSI. SSI, however, is usually cheaper than PADI.

WHICH DIVE SHOP?

This should probably be the next question in your list. Remember that diving is made safe by having experienced instructors and guides who pay attention to detail and are good at conveying information clearly. More importantly, they should help you feel secure, as these are people who will be responsible for you underwater.

Although it would be easier to organize your dive course online, it would be advisable to actually visit the shop in person and ask questions. Aside from taking note of the prices, get to know the instructor. Can he or she answer your questions? Is he or she easy to understand? You should also ask about the equipment and make sure that they are well-maintained. More importantly, make sure that they have got the right size for you. Believe me, you would not want to be diving in with an ill-fitting mask.

THE DEVIL IS IN THE DETAIL

Always ask what your diving package includes. You do not want to be paying additional fees during the duration of your course. Make sure that it includes all the equipment you would need to complete your training as well as the transportation to the dive spots for your open water training.

TIME AND MONEY

Depending on the location that you pick, an open water course should cost around 9,000 to 14,000 Baht, which would include 2 ½ days of theory and confined or pool diving and 4 open water dives that will be done in a span of two days. Some dive centers also include accommodation in their pricing so it is best to check this when comparing prices.

ROOKIE MISTAKES TO WATCH OUT FOR

When you are underwater, cancel out that reflex of holding your breath. Next, despite being anxious of being in an unfamiliar environment, breathe normally so you do not run out of air too fast. No matter how engrossed you are by the sights around you, never leave your group, especially your buddy. And, finally, avoid touching marine life.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE!

Not all dive centers are created equal. Some are more professional than others. Do let us know about your experience. If you had a fantastic experience with a diving center, feel free to rant about them in the comments section below and give them some good business. They deserve it!
