EPIC DAY TRIPS FROM CANGGU [UPDATED DECEMBER 2020]
[UPDATED DECEMBER 2020]
Whether you are visiting or living within the charming region of Canggu, eventually you are going to want to explore more of the beautiful island of Bali. This island is rich in culture, history, and nature. Temples, beaches, and conservation centers are just the beginning of epic day trips from Canggu that you can enjoy.
Gunung Kawi Temple
An hour northeast of Canggu is one of Bali’s largest temple systems, Candi Gunung Kawi. This temple is not only crucial for the spiritual beliefs of the Balinese people, but it is also a stunning archeological marvel. The main complex is made up of ten shrines that have been cut from the rock cliff face in an imitation of shrunken down realistic buildings. They are each 8 meters tall and look to be based on other shrines from around Bali. The detail and beauty will amaze you, and it is worth the drive!
On the very edge of the peninsula of Bali is Thomas Beach, a little less than an hour and a half from Canggu. Imagine shimmering white sand, crystal blue water, and the perfect spot to sit while sipping on a coconut; that is what you can expect from Thomas Beach. Make it an all-day day trip by grabbing lunch at a local restaurant, renting water gear, taking a swim, or just relaxing with a good book.
Just north of Ubud, only an hour’s drive from Canggu is the Pura Tirta Empul (Holy Water Temple). It is located in the village of Manukaya, just below the Presidential Palace of Tampaksiring. It is said that the God Indra created this sacred spring with curative abilities. Many worshippers and tourists worldwide come to marvel at its beauty and to cleanse themselves within the pool.
Ubud Monkey Forest
An hour northeast of Canggu is the Ubud Monkey Forest. This forest lies within Padangtegal village and is seen as an essential educational as well as a spiritual conservation center. 900 monkeys are living here within the forest, but that is not all. You will also find 14th-century temples as well as the breathtaking forest itself. This is an educational day trip that is beloved by all ages.
Tanah Lot Temple
Tanah Lot literally translates to “earth sea” temple, as it is one of the seven sea temples located on the coast of Bali. This temple is steeped in Balinese mythologies that go back centuries, and it is easy to see why when you visit. Tanah Lot is perched on a massive rock just a 25-minute drive from Canggu, making it a magnificent day trip to witness this astounding landmark.
Jatiluwih Rice Terraces
Driving a little over an hour straight north will bring you to the beautiful Jatiluwih rice terraces. These terraces, while widely famous, are rarely visited. Over 600 hectares of stunningly green rice fields wait for you to hike through. Not only can you trek through the rice terraces but also walk along the river and eat within the small villages at the local restaurants. It will be a day to remember, and you will likely return for a repeat adventure.
It will be a long day, but it is worth it! From Canggu, you can catch a ride to Sanur, which is less than an hour away. From there, it is a 30-minute boat ride to the gorgeous island of Nusa Lembongan. There are endless activities to participate in on the island from taking pictures at the Blue Lagoon to eating traditional food from local restaurants to exploring Devil’s Tears. Have a plan for what you want to do when you arrive, so you don’t end up pointlessly crisscrossing the island. This day trip will have you going back for seconds, thirds, and probably fourth servings of awesomeness!
Bali is an incredibly magical place, and there is always plenty to see on your epic day trips from Canggu. There is also a plethora to see within Canggu itself. Try experiencing Canggu’s amazing ecotourism and how these incredible people are creating beautiful change in the world.
