Koh Phangan’s Top 5 restaurants to cure your hangover
Do you know what’s fun? Partying your ass off! Particularly, when it’s Full or Half Moon Party time on Koh Phangan. Do you know what is not fun? The much-dreaded hangover once the sun comes up. As Uncle Ben once said in Spider-Man: “With great alcohol consumption comes great hangovers.” Or something akin to that. We at Slumber Party had – and always will have – our fair share of pounding headaches. Therefore, we pride ourselves in knowing just the right places to stumble into in the late mornings or early afternoons. Whether the hair-of-the-dog is the right pick for you or a full English breakfast, there are plenty of options. So, here are our Top 5 restaurants to cure your hangover on Koh Phangan after a long night out.
Oh, also water helps or so we’ve heard.
If you are looking for one of our staff members then chances are you will find him/her here. Ando’s, as it’s commonly known, is the home of the greatest tacos you can buy for Baht. Our personal favorites are the fish tacos, but you can’t go wrong with any of the other varieties. A solid portion of nachos for sharing is always a good idea when you come with your fellow hung-over friends.
The quality is, undoubtedly, of a high standard. Chef Ando, literally, grew up with Mexican food and has since learned how to prepare proper Latin food. Most of the ingredients such as the fish and seafood come from the island itself. The avocados for their delicious guacamole, on the other hand, are imported from good ol’ Straya (Australia, of course).
If you feel like that an alcoholic beverage is the way to go then look no further than their self-proclaimed ‘killer margarita’. Ando’s margarita are some of the best you will find in Thailand. It certainly packs the punch to wake you up… or knock you down again.
Ando Loco is the place to go to simultaneously cure your hangover and get drunk again with half a dozen Tequila shots. Which is the reason why we love it so much.
Opening times: 2 pm – 10 pm (closed on Wednesday)
Address: Moo 1, Taladkao Road, Thongsala, Koh Phangan, Surat Thani, 84280
Channel your Inner Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid because this Wild West-themed bar/restaurant ain’t messin’ around! A major reason why we love getting drunk on a Saturday is so that we can indulge in the Sunday Roast Dinner at Outlaws. They call it “Dinner”, but by the time we wake up in the afternoon, it’s more like breakfast or lunch. It’s also located right next to our Slumber Party Hostel.
If we had to describe Outlaws’ food in one word, it would be sumptuous. Besides the Sunday Roast, this saloon serves imported steaks, ribs, and half roast chicken. The portion sizes are on a Western level, so expect to be fully satisfied with your meal. With this specific atmosphere surrounding you, it would also only be appropriate to wash down your food with a couple of cold beers. Who knows? Maybe that’s the perfect combination of curing your hangover and getting you ready for another wild ride. Pun intended.
Outlaws Saloon is quite possibly Koh Phangan’s most unique establishment and we are always pleased with the food here. Often times, we also just come here to have a few beers and play pool, because that’s what real cowboys do… right?
Opening times: 8 am – 12 am (Daily)
Address: 112/39 Moo 1 Thongsala/Ban Tai Road, Tambon Ko Pha-ngan, Ko Pha Ngan, Chang Wat Surat Thani 84320 (Address for Slumber Party, since we couldn’t find the exact one for Outlaws Saloon)
SOHO Bar & Grill
When Scottish owner Jon McGlinchey opened his restaurant in 2015, sports enthusiasts on the island collectively rejoiced. There is no better way to enjoy a thrilling sports game than with a juicy burger and a chilled draught beer, and vice versa. SOHO provides that and more. The décor is kept simple and modern, but the atmosphere here is electrifying, especially now during the Football World Cup 2018. You will forget your nausea, dizziness and pounding headache, once you become a part of the passionate community.
The food is exactly what you would imagine seeing in a sports bar. Steaks, ribs, tacos, and the abovementioned burgers are the most commonly ordered items from the menu. The quality is great and it comes with a good variety of sauces from normal ketchup to peri peri mayo.
What we love the most about SOHO, however, is their astounding selection of beers and other beverages you would typically find in a traditional Pub. We mean, when was the last time you had a Hoegaarden, Stella or Guinness? If you can’t remember then this might be due to your hangover, but, nonetheless, SOHO has them all. However, speaking of traditional pubs…
Opening times: 9:30 am – 1 am (Daily; open late for all major sporting events)
Address: 44/56 Moo1 Thong Sala, Koh Phangan
The Mason Arms
Did we say that Outlaws is the most unique establishment in Koh Phangan? We might have to retract this statement as The Masons Arms is not just an English pub-themed restaurant; it IS an English pub hidden in the jungle of Thong Sala. The entire exterior and interior decoration are built and designed in classic Tudor fashion. The idea was conceived in 2007 by an English expat from Southampton. His goal was to build an exact replica of his local pub and we believe that he succeeded in this endeavor.
Similar to SOHO, the bar offers plenty of beers – imported, local and on tap – ciders, ales and other adult bevies. The food, as you can imagine, is just as classic. You have the options of full English breakfasts, bangers & mash, roast dinners, fish & chips – the whole lot! For us, this is by far the best place to go to for an English brekkie, which might also have to do with the appropriate atmosphere. The jukebox, which primarily plays classic and modern British pop songs, a pool table and dart boards round off the experience.
So, for all you Brits out there who feel homesick after traveling through Southeast Asia for months on end; this is for you. Curries, fried rice and noodles, and papaya salads are all great, but, we know, sometimes you need a little taste of home.
Opening times: 9:30 am – 12 am (Daily)

For our last “hungover-but-getting-drunk-again” restaurant we chose one that is also close to Slumber Party. It’s not laziness, in our opinion, as much as it is “energy conservation”. What makes the Food Factory stand out is that it’s open 24/7. This makes it a great option for when you are hungover, drunk or somewhere in the middle. It is a restaurant very much in the vein of an American diner, complete with fantastic beef burgers and french fries. There even is one dedicated to the much beloved* Donald Trump.
If, after four entries on our list, you miss the mention of pizza, then you will be happy that the Food Factory operates a wood fire oven just for that. In all other regards, they pretty much check the boxes of the previous restaurants. It’s a nice place to go to, since it is mostly busy and, therefore, you are bound to walk into friends, who may or may not be off their trolleys just as much as you are.
*this was a clearly sarcastic comment and Slumber Party does not support any political parties. Unless this party promotes parties, beer pong and pub crawls.
We already wrote an extensive post on How To Cure A Hangover. For this post, however, we wanted to specify more on what “helps” us through the rough times. After all, as soon as the sun goes down, we need to bring OUR A-game again in order to bring YOU the best freakin’ party ever!
Afterwards, we will probably see you in one of the restaurants, bars, and pubs we mentioned above. Let us know in the comments if you have been in any of those and if their food helped you just as much. You can also tell us, which of our staff members you have seen there with a massive hangover. Don’t worry, we won’t fire them. On the contrary, we might give them a medal*!
