Negotiating with transport
Tuk Tuks and taxis are everywhere in Thailand. When taking a taxi, make sure to always get into a clearly marked car and that they are using a meter. When taking Tuk Tuks negotiate the price before jumping in. It is important to know roughly how much you should be paying before approaching someone for transport this way you know if they are trying to rip you off. Remember, always barter them down until you are happy. At the end of the day the drivers know they are being unfair and have also been doing this for years.
Buying cheap buckets
While traveling it can be so tempting to buy the cheapest alcohol in order to get drunk on a tight budget. If you are not careful buying the buckets can be putting yourself at risk for alcohol poisoning. Or marking yourself as, an easy target for drug spiking. No one wants a trip to hospital while on holidays or with nasty hangover that leaves you bed bound. The buckets are huge, (it’ literally like the buckets kids take to play in the sand at the beach) The buckets are typically made with 300ml local spirits, M10 (Redbull energy drink) and a can of Sod. All for roughly 6 USD. After one of these you will be buzzing, after 2 you wont be remembering the night… be cautious when partaking in Phuket famous buckets.
Not taking enough money from the ATM’s
A mistake so easy to happen and it can end up costing A LOT. ATMs in Thailand can charge up to $7 USD per transaction, as if that wasn’t enough some ATMs can also give the wrong amount. Be vigilant with this, scammers are out there and have put devices on some ATM machines. Always recount your money once receiving it from the machine and always only use the big banks ATMs. To learn more about handling money while in Thailand Click Here.
Smoking in the wrong places
Just because you see the locals are smoking and dropping butts, does not mean, you, as a tourist can do it too. The best idea is to always look for smoking areas, ashtrays or bins. The police have started to fine tourist for smoking and dropping their cigarette butts.
Loosing your Passport!
We shouldn’t have to say this… DO NOT take your passport out with you. Lock it up somewhere safe and always remember to double check you have it when leaving the hostel/ hotel. Replacing passports while on holidays is an absolute nightmare and one you want to avoid at all costs!
